Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply for a grant?

Grants are available to former Fowey River Academy pupils, who spent a minimum of three years at the school, and who are under the age of 25 on the 1st of September in the year of their first application.

What courses qualify for grants

There are three categories of award:

  1. Grants for support at university, vocational, professional or technical courses

  2. Grants for equipment necessary to pursue a profession or career or occupation

  3. Grants for other educational purposes at the discretion of the trustees.

I have won £5 million on the National Lottery, can I still apply for a grant?

Yes. The grants are not means-tested and do not have to be repaid. However, enhancements may be made where there is a perceived need or to reflect consideration of specific personal circumstances.

I receive a bursary or award from another charity or organisation. Can I still apply for a grant?

Yes. The Fowey Grammar School Foundation does not consider monetary awards from other bodies to which applicants are entitled when deciding to award a grant.

Can I still claim for a grant in years in which my course requires me to work abroad or on work placement for which I will be paid?

Yes. No income is taken into account in making grants.

Can I still receive a grant if I go on to post-graduate study

Yes, you can continue to receive a grant for ongoing study e.g. Masters Degrees, “sandwich” courses, and language students spending a year abroad as part of a language course.

How much will I get?

Grant amounts can vary from year to year depending on the performance of the Foundation’s investments and any costs associated with the administration of the charity.

But will I be given the full award available in any given year?

Trustees can reduce or reject poor/unsatisfactory personal statements, so you may not receive the maximum available award.

What is the deadline for applications?

The closing date for applications for those on courses tied to the academic year is 20th October. Any other applications may be submitted at any time.

If my application is successful, when will I receive the money?

All PG Students and those in years 2-5 can expect the money to be paid into their nominated bank account by the end of November, provided all criteria have been met and an appropriate official email confirmation has been received. Students in the First Year of their course will be paid in January once they have completed their first term.

What happens if I fail my exams at the end of the year and have to repeat that year?

You will not be eligible for the repeated year but can apply for grants in future years.

After the first year, I realised I had made the wrong choice of course and have arranged to start on a different course next year. Can I apply for another grant?

No. Grants are NOT available for a repeated year for which you have already received an award.

What should I do if I change my mobile phone number, email address or bank details?

Inform the Clerk as soon as possible.
