About the Fowey Grammar School Foundation

The objective of the charity is to advance the education of children and young people in the area of benefit. Financial assistance is given to both Fowey Primary School & Fowey River Academy (previously Fowey Community College) and to individual students under the age of 25 who qualify for awards in the form of annual grants.

Grants can be awarded to students who require financial assistance for Higher Education and for Further Education students pursuing a vocational training qualification.

Grants are not means tested but are awarded at the discretion of the Trustees under the criteria applied to the grant application, which must include details of the course and a personal statement.

Trustees

The Trustees are comprised of members of the community of Fowey and the surrounding area. There is a mixture of past and present teaching staff from Fowey River Academy, as well as ex-students and local business people.

The Trustees have a duty of care to manage the charity’s income and capital and use them appropriately to satisfy the objectives of the Scheme.

Assets

The Foundation has assets in both property and a share portfolio under its control thanks to an endowment following the sale of the original Fowey Grammar School buildings and land. The Foundation has a duty to protect that endowment for the long-term benefit of the young people of Fowey.

Grants

At the end of each year, any remaining income after costs have been deducted must be used to further the objectives of the charity. This means that the total sum available to be given as grants differs from year to year depending on the performance of the Foundation’s investments and any costs associated with the administration of the charity and the management of its assets.

Each year, approximately £50,000 is awarded to ex-students of the Academy.
